Houston, Texas, November 9, 2023 — The 6th edition of the Diasporans for PDP Civic Engagement Series, held on Saturday, November 4, 2023, via Zoom, in partnership with We Stand With PDP National Orientation Platform, under the theme "THE TRUE STATE OF OUR PARTY AND MOVING FORWARD!" witnessed a candid and critical discussion on the state of the party and the pressing issues facing our nation.

A major focus of the panel discussions was on the need for discipline within the party, addressing impunity, rebranding efforts, early preparation for the 2027 elections, the imperative of carrying the people along, the importance of appealing to a wider population of Nigerians, empowering party leadership at all levels, and the necessity of making party primaries open and transparent.

    1. Discipline and Adherence to Party Constitution: The issue of discipline within the party was raised as a matter of utmost importance. It was emphasized that indiscipline and impunity can no longer be tolerated. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) must ensure full adherence to the party constitution and take prompt, fair, and equal measures to address any violations. Individuals who have shown disloyalty to the party should be expelled.

    1. Elect People with Integrity in the NWC: It was proposed that the National Working Committee (NWC) should consist of individuals known for their integrity, commitment, and loyalty to the party. This would help restore trust and confidence in the leadership and put an end to impunity.

    1. Assert PDP's Role as the Opposition: The panel called on the PDP to function as a true opposition party by leading protests and providing effective opposition to government policies. This proactive stance is seen as vital in holding the government accountable and addressing the concerns of the citizens.

    1. Addressing Insecurity: The panel expressed deep concern over the state of insecurity, particularly in states like Imo. The PDP was urged to work toward ensuring security and safety for all Nigerians, emphasizing that the party should be at the forefront of demanding solutions.

    1. Work and Pray Philosophy: The concept of "work and pray" was emphasized as a guiding principle. It was stressed that the party should focus on mobilization, publicity, and effective governance rather than just aiming to return to power. Positive actions and good governance will naturally draw people to the PDP.

    1. Seeking New Leadership: It was recommended that the PDP should identify and promote serious, well-meaning Nigerians for leadership positions. This involves moving away from recycling candidates and presenting fresh, competent faces that Nigerians can trust.

    1. Rebranding and Regaining Trust: The panel acknowledged the need for the PDP to rebrand and reposition itself as a serious political party. The party should highlight its historical achievements and present a clear plan for the future to regain the trust of Nigerians.

    1. Functional PDP Institute: The PDP institute, a mechanism for research, publicity, and operations, need to be made functional and relevant. The institute should be positioned to effectively contribute to the party's growth and effectiveness.

    1. Conflict Resolution and Accountability: The party was encouraged to establish a robust conflict resolution mechanism and hold members accountable for their actions. Addressing internal disputes promptly and fairly is crucial for party unity.

    1. Early Preparation for 2027: The need to commence preparations for the 2027 elections was emphasized. Waiting until the last moment is not in the party's best interest. Early planning and mobilization are essential for success.

    1. Regular Events for Party Promotion: The National Publicity Secretary and the Youth Leader were urged to organize regular events to promote the party and its progress. These events should engage and inform the public about the PDP's initiatives and plans.

    1. Present Credible and Popular Candidates: The PDP was advised to present credible and popular candidates in upcoming elections. This strategy would enhance the party's chances of winning the support of the electorate.

    1. Grassroots Engagement: In addition to operating on social media, party members were encouraged to actively participate and campaign at the grassroots level. It was emphasized that connecting with the people at the ward level would make the party's campaign more effective.

    1. Carry the People Along: PDP leaders and electoral candidates must actively work to carry the people along. This involves listening to their concerns, engaging with them, and ensuring that their voices are heard in the party's decision-making processes. Building a sense of inclusivity and participation is vital for a successful political party.

    1. Broadening Appeal and Scientific Approach: Party members represent only a small percentage of the more than 93 million PVC holders in Nigeria. PDP must endeavour to appeal to a wider population of Nigerians. The party cannot go to the election on the assumption that the people are fed up with the ruling party and should get the message on their own. The PDP must review the last election and prepare for the 2027 election based on scientific election data. This includes repairing internal processes and examining the electorate to ensure the party can cross the threshold. A scientific approach to election management and messaging is essential for success.

    1. Empower Party Leadership at All Levels: The PDP must empower the party leadership at the ward and local levels. These grassroots leaders are essential for mobilizing and engaging with the local population. Strengthening their capabilities and resources will enhance the party's ability to connect with the people effectively.

    1. Transparent and Open Party Primaries: The concept of a "unity list" must be discarded, and party primaries should be made open and transparent. Allowing party members to have a say in selecting candidates will build trust and confidence within the party.

    1. Accountability of Elected Officials: People elected to offices under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party must be answerable to the party, not the other way round. Those who are governors today are in their positions because the party gave them a platform. It is crucial for elected officials to prioritize the party's interests and maintain accountability to the party's values and goals.

The Diasporans for PDP calls on the party leadership and members to take these recommendations seriously and work diligently to implement them. By addressing these concerns and taking proactive steps, the PDP can strengthen its position as a formidable political force in Nigeria, working towards a better future for all.
